Yabbly evolved out of an initial idea for a snap polling product that would leverage one's social network. As I was brought on board to be a co-founder it became apparent that the concept was neither viral in its adoption nor very sticky — users who did try the product were unlikely to use it again.
In the absence of heavy product usage, we relied on the direct feedback from users through interviews and careful qualitative observation of the product use. One the course of nine months we evolved the concept into a community for product purchasers looking to both give and receive advice. We developed a "Karma" feature for giving positive feedback and to ensure users felt social pressure to contribute as much as they received. The monetization opportunity was to sell both native advertising and the ability for retailers to pay to directly engage with customers and provide support or offers.
